Strumming Music
Title: Strumming Music
Artist: Charlemagne Palestine

Music Media: CD
Composer: Charlemagne Palestine
Artist Country: USA
Label (Catalogue No.): Dunya
Recorded: 1974
Genre: Minimalism
Brief description: Strumming Music (1974) remains the best-known work of Charlemagne Palestine, an American minimalist composer, performer, and visual artist. It features over 45 minutes of Palestine forcefully playing two notes in rapid alternation that slowly expand into clusters. He performed this on a nine-foot Bösendorfer grand piano with the sustain pedal depressed for the entire length of the work. As the music swells (and the piano gradually detunes), the harmonics build and the listener can hear a variety of timbres rarely produced by the piano. A recording of Strumming Music was also Palestine's second vinyl album in the 1970s, reissued on CD in 1991. Since then, several additional recordings (featuring Palestine on piano, organ, harmonium, and voice) from the 1970s—including new recordings of more recent works such as Schlingen-Blängen—have become available.

Palestine's performance style is ritualistic: he generally surrounds himself (and his piano) with stuffed animals, smokes large numbers of kretek (Indonesian clove cigarettes), and drinks cognac.

Artist: Robert Werner

Music Media: CD
Composer: Robert Werner, Cole Porter, Charles Aznavour etc.
Artist Country: Austria
Label (Catalogue No.): VRC-PCD-9740
Recorded: 2010
Genre: Opera, Operetta, Musical, Jazz, Swing
Brief description: Born in Vienna as the son of a musically interested father, who himself played nine instruments, Robert Werner gathered his first stage experiences at the age of 4. Besides the education as an art-, literature- and music salesman in the well known Viennese music house “Doblinger”, he finished his studies as an opera singer and pianist at the conservatory of the city of Vienna.
Over the past years, Werner got devoted to his own compositions, which he brought to perfection with the help of composer and conductor Ulf-Diether Soyka of the conservatory in Vienna.
His rhythmic and lively compositions add up to his amazing program arrangements. Besides, the artist composes for several colleagues, such as Jose Carreras and the Italian figure skating star and European champion Carolina Kostner. The piece “Solamente per Carolina” is always appreciated at international exhibitions and competitions as one of the musical highlights of the event.
Quote by Robert Werner:
I don't believe in separating "serious" and "entertainment" music. If you listen closely, you'll find elements in Puccini that are also found in jazz. I like every type of music; in my music you'll find pretty much everything -- from Frank Sinatra to Kurt Weill all the way to Tom Jones, Richard Wagner and Oscar Peterson.

Keith Jarrett The Köln Concert
Title: Keith Jarrett: The Köln Concert
Artist: Keith Jarrett

Music Media: CD
Composer: Keith Jarrett
Artist Country: USA
Label (Catalogue No.): ECM 1064/65 ST
Recorded: 1975
Genre: Jazz
Brief description: Preliminaries to the concert were not auspicious. Jarrett arrived at the opera house late and hungry, and needed to eat a hasty meal before going on stage. When he was on, he found that the wrong piano had been delivered. But his performance was enthusiastically received, and the subsequent recording was acclaimed by the critics and an enormous commercial success. With sales of more than 3.5 million, it became the best-selling solo album in jazz history.
The recording is in three parts, lasting 26 minutes, 34 minutes and 7 minutes, respectively. As the concert was originally programmed on LP, the second part was split into parts labeled "IIa" and "IIb". Part IIc actually is a 3rd part, the encore.
A notable aspect of this concert is Jarrett's ability to produce very extensive improvised material over a vamp of one or two chords for prolonged periods of time. For instance, in Part I, he spends almost 12 minutes vamping over the chords Am7 (A minor 7) to G major, sometimes in a slow, rubato feel, and other times in a bluesy, gospel rock feel. And for about the last 6 minutes of Part I, he vamps over an A major theme. Roughly the first 8 minutes of Part II A is a vamp over a D major groove with a repeated bass vamp in the left hand, and in Part II B, Jarrett improvises over an F# minor vamp for approximately the first 6 minutes.
