Music Media: CD
Composer: Joseph Haydn
Artist Country: Austria, USA
Label (Catalogue No.): Gramola 98878
Recorded: 2009
Genre: Classical
Brief description: 200 years after his death, there is hardly another composer whose name carries such widely different connotations as Joseph Haydn´s (1732-1809). On the one hand, there is the ever-present stereotype of "Papa-Haydn", a moniker, it must be noted, that was coined during Haydn´s lifetime and was never meant to trivialize his musical achievements.
Shortly before he immersed himself in England´s world of music, Haydn was already happy to comply with publisher Bland´s expectations and entrusted him with a few original compositions he created strting from the turn of the year 1789/90: the three Trios for flute, cello, and piano, hob. XV: 15-17.With this instrumentation, Haydn presumably was in tune with Britain´s musical taste of the day as the flute was particularly popular among its bourgeois and aristrocratic circles. Title: Ungarische Tänze 1-21
Artist: Krassimira Jordan, Thomas Kreuzberger
|
Music Media: CD
Composer: Johannes Brahms
Artist Country: USA, Austria
Label (Catalogue No.): Gramola (CODAEX)
Genre: Classical
Brief description: The Hungarian Dances (German: Ungarische Tänze) by Johannes Brahms (WoO 1), are a set of 21 lively dance tunes based mostly on Hungarian themes. Only numbers 11, 14 and 16 are entirely original compositions. In fact, number 5 was based on the csárdás by Kéler Béla titled "Bartfai emlek" which Brahms mistakenly thought was a traditional folksong.[1] They vary from about a minute to four minutes in length. They are among Brahms' most popular works, and were certainly the most profitable for him. Each dance has been arranged for a wide variety of instruments and ensembles. Brahms originally wrote the version for piano four-hands and later arranged the first 10 dances for solo piano. The most famous Hungarian Dance is No. 5 in F♯ minor (G minor in the orchestral version).

Title: Nachtgesang im Walde: Werke für 3-5 Männerstimmen
Artist: Chorus Viennensis, Guido Mancusi
|
Composer: Franz Schubert
Artist Country: Austria
Label (Catalogue No.): Philips (Universal)
Recorded: 1997
Genre: Classical
Brief description: 'Nachtgesang' (Night Songs) is a collection of works by Franz Schubert (1797-1828), composer of an abundant body of choral music. In these 11 pieces with the common romantic theme of the night, Schubert is in his element, but surprisingly little importance is given to these masterly pieces. Monumental pieces like 'Gesang der Geister uber den Wassern' will be juxtaposed with more descriptive pieces like 'Der Gondelfahrer' and sweet, soaring arias like 'Im Gegenwartigen Vergangenes.' Some light accompaniment.
Schubert is one of the greatest of all time, and each of these songs, whether its focus be romantic or spiritual love, is a choral gem! Schubert was born into a musical family, and received formal musical training through much of his childhood. While Schubert had a close circle of friends and associates who admired his work (amongst them the prominent singer Johann Michael Vogl), wide appreciation of his music during his lifetime was limited at best. He was never able to secure adequate permanent employment, and for most of his career he relied on the support of friends and family. He made some money from published works, and occasionally gave private musical instruction. In the last year of his life he began to receive wider acclaim. He died at the age of 31 of typhoid fever. This album was recorded at Collegiumskapelle Kalksburg, Austria. Domain Artist: www.chorusviennensis.at
